Thick Jungle, or Jungle River in PAL regions and Japan (ジャングルリバー), is the 4th level in Ape Escape and Ape Escape: On the Loose. It is also the 1st level of the Cenozoic Era.

Description[]

A mysterious jungle inhabited by lots of new and dangerous monsters in each corner. A big part of this green land is made up of rivers. Due to the size of the stage, Spike is given the Monkey Radar to find the most hidden apes.

Walkthrough[]

Go Catch 6 Monkeys![]

In the entire stage Spike is only able to catch 9 out of the 14 monkeys, due to three of them being at the other side of the big chasm and another two requiring to be shot from the ground.

The UFO Monkey, while difficult to hit without the Slingback Shooter, can still be defeated with some persistence with the Stun Club.

Go Catch the Monkeys![]

When revisiting the Stage, you'll require to have at least the Slingback Shooter and the Sky Flyer. With the Slingback in hand you'll be able to catch Maki (Colt) and Selur (Sneakers), while the Sky Flyer will give you access to the river's canyon and allow you to catch three more monkeys.

Specter Coins Locations[]

Catfish Bank - A Specter Coin can be found if you go to the right just as you enter the first boat section.

Eels Pond - The second Specter Coin is visible to the left in the second boat section and can be reached by going straight and then left to loop back around to it.

Main Area - The third Specter Coin is located on the boxy wooden archway that leads to the UFO monkey from the start of the level. To obtain it you must use the Sky Flyer gadget and fly up to it from the ledge to the left of it.

Canyon's Cave - The fourth Specter Coin can be found at the other side of the chasm and bouncy mushroom platform. You will need the Sky Flyer to clear the gap. Continue on past the vines to the cliff, and climb down the side of it to find a monkey cooking food over a campfire. The Specter Coin is floating above it.

Time Attack[]

To clear Time Attack you need to catch 5 monkeys. A plausible route to take is catching Marquez (Spy), Livinston (Clumsy) and George (IBall) in the first area, collecting as many Energy Chips as you can get from the enemies in the way and then enter the Catfish's bank to catch Maki (Colt), being one of the nearest apes from the starting area.

Trivia[]

  • This level introduces black pants monkeys.
  • This is the first level in the game to have a monkey who flies a UFO.
  • The Cenozoic Era is essentially the modern era, defined as the last 66 million years of Earth's history. All future levels take place in increasingly recent ages within the Cenozoic Era).
  • The monkeys Nasus, Elehcim, and Selur from the NTSC-U/C version of Ape Escape are the words "Susan Michele Rules" spelled backwards. Susan Michele was a producer at Sony Computer Entertainment America, and got to work on Ape Escape as well as provide additional voices[2].
  • While Ape Escape: On the Loose refers to the giant creature as an electric catfish[3], the original game only calls it a strange fish[4][5].
  • In the original Ape Escape, the monkey at the campfire is cooking fish[6]. In Ape Escape: On the Loose, he's cooking bananas[7].
