Solid Snake (ソリッド・スネーク, Soriddo Sunēku), also known as Snake (スネーク, Sunēku) and as his real name David (デイビッド, Deibiddo) is the major protagonist of the Metal Gear series.
In his own series, Snake was a former spy, special operations soldier, and mercenary. He was infamously known as "The Man Who Makes the Impossible Possible" and his exploits made him into a living legend among the military black ops. He is also a product of the Les Enfants Terribles Project. Snake was a clone of a world-renowned soldier Big Boss, along with his brothers Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake. Initially a Green Beret, Snake was later inducted into High-Tech Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND in the mid 1990s while it was commanded by Big Boss. Repeatedly tasked with disarming and destroying the latest incarnation of Metal Gear, a bipedal nuclear weapon-armed tank, Snake would thrice avert potential nuclear catastrophe, becoming a famed war hero.
In the Ape Escape series, he is somewhat of a recurring character.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Snake Vs. Monkey)[]
Snake is called in by Roy Campbell on his day off for an "important mission". Thinking it was to destroy another Metal Gear he joined in, but was quickly informed that he'd be catching Monkeys. Although he was upset at this, he decided to do it.
Ape Escape 3[]
Mesal Gear Solid: Snake Escape[]
In Mesal Gear Solid: Snake Escape, Snake was tasked by Roy Campbell to destroy Mesal Gear. Unfortunately, he was captured by the monkeys and used for ransom. The monkeys wanted 1 Billion Bananas or they would fire Mesal Gear onto the world. With no one else to turn to, Campbell called the Professor and requested the assistance of Spike, Jimmy, Kei and Yumi to stop Mesal Gear. To his bad luck, they were at a summer camp and unable to help. So they gave a Pipo Monkey the combat knowledge of Snake, and created Pipo Snake as a result.

- Snake's real name, David, is shared by his English voice actor, David Hayter. Kojima has stated that this was not intentional and was purely coincidental. His name is actually reference to two fictional characters: David Bowman from 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dave Forrest from Policenauts (Also created by Kojima).
