Pirate Isle is the 19th level in Ape Escape 2.

Description

Pirate Isle is a large volcanic island inhabited by pirate monkeys. The level starts on a large pirate ship with a monkey mermaid figurehead. From the beach the player enters into the caves, which are filled with rivers of lava. There is a bedroom area for the pirates and also a mine shaft at different sides of the cavern.

• Captain Ook and his description are a reference to Captain Hook from Peter Pan.
• Hawkins is a reference to Jim Hawkins, the protagonist of the novel Treasure Island.
  • Furthermore, Stephenson mentions Long John, which refers to Long John Silver, the antagonist of the same novel.
• Oliver and his quote are a reference to Oliver Twist and his iconic line "Please Sir, I want some more."
• Mel, the cannonball monkey described as "What a sideshow!" may be a reference to Sideshow Mel from The Simpsons.
• It's possible that Scratchy's name and his description "I'm itching to get you!" is a reference to Itchy & Scratchy, also from The Simpsons.
• Indy, the monkey riding the mine cart, is a reference to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
• At the bow of the pirate ship, Pugwash and Hawkins are re-enacting Jack and Rose's "I'm flying" scene from James Cameron's film Titanic.
  • This reference would be expanded upon in Ape Escape 3's level Arctic Wonderland, where the ship is now "The Monktanic", Monkcaprio and Ookiss take the roles of Jack and Rose, and the scene is directed by J. Cameroon. While these names are only present in the European version of the game, the reference is still clear in the North American release.
