Fossil Field, known in Japan and Europe as Ancient Plain (こだいのはらっぱ, lit. "Plain of Ancient History" or "Ancient Plain") is the 1st level of Ape Escape and Ape Escape: On the Loose. It is also the 1st level of The Lost Land era.
Description[]
After the incident with the Time Machine, Spike lands in a very small prehistoric grassy area with a few palm trees that four monkeys have taken as their lair. A rocket is crashed on a mountain. To avoid any possible change in the course of history, Spike is tasked with catching the loose monkeys by the Professor and is sent his first two gadgets, the Stun Club to defend himself and the Time Net to send the monkeys back to the present.
Walkthrough[]
Go Catch 3 Monkeys![]
Being the tutorial, all you need to do is get used to the controls and the usages of the two initial gadgets. The only way to finish the stage is by catching the three monkeys on the ground, since the remaining one has taken shelter in a tall hill that's unreachable for Spike in his first visit.
Go Catch the Monkeys![]
To 100% Clear this stage, you must clear Frosty Retreat for the first time and get the Sky Flyer. Once with the gadget in hand, you can use it to reach Tray C (Exocet) and wipe the level from all monkeys.
An alternative way to achieve this earlier in the game is using the Slingback Levitation Glitch when you have gotten that gadget from Cryptic Relics.
Specter Coins Locations[]
The Specter Coin is located on the top of a palm tree.
Enemies[]
Time Attack[]
In order to make time as quick as possible the optimum route is capturing Noonan (Blair), Jorjy (Cruise), Nati (Fruity) and Tray C (Exocet) in that order, always having the Magic Punch equipped to stun them from the distance or the Slingback Shooter with the explosive charges if the monkeys are on ground level. It's also a good idea to get rid of the Natsuns to slow time down with their Energy Chips.

Trivia[]
- Some changes can be seen between the Pizza Hut Japanese Ape Escape early demo, and the final version.
- This level introduces yellow and light blue pants monkeys.
- Zaius from Ape Escape: On the Loose is likely named after Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes.
- Ukki is seemingly named after the Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound monkeys make.
- The UK translation in the original game implies Tray C (Exocet) was the one that crashed the rocket in the mountain while in On The Loose he blames Eins (Jorgy/Cruise) as the one responsible.
