The Ape Cannon is an enemy that appears in Ape Escape.
Appearance[]
Ape Cannons are large weapons that faintly resemble an upgraded Monkey UFO, with a circular military green chassis supported by two beams by its sides and a cannon's mouth by the front of the machine. The cockpit is set on top of the base and has a blue tinted windshield that allows its Monkey pilot to aim manually at any given objective. Referencing the design of Pipo Helmets, the Ape Cannons are equipped with a red lightbulb on top of the cockpit. Specter's emblem is proudly decorating the cannon's front.
Strategy[]
Ape Cannons, much like Monkey UFOs, await deactivated inside certain platforms stuck in the ground and remain like that unless the nearby monkey gets alerted by Spike. If this happens, the monkey will hop inside the platform and summon the Ape Cannon.
Once inside the cockpit, the monkey will aim towards Spike's direction at all times and shoot an explosive charge at him every few seconds.
Unlike Monkey UFOs, Ape Cannons' heftiness makes them too sturdy to be attacked directly with most of your gadgets. In order to deal damage to an Ape Cannon you have to hop in a Tank and use the Grenade Launcher. Due to the monkey's great accuracy it's more likely your tank will get destroyed in the middle of the fight. If this happens, use the Super Hoop to flee from the battle and go get another tank from its respawn point. You'll need 5 shoots to destroy the Ape Cannon. Once deactivated, the monkey controlling the machine will hop out, enabling you to capture it.
As it happens with Tree-mendous and Monkey UFOs, you can capture the monkeys directly without having to face the Ape Cannon. Due to both pilots being White Pants Monkeys, you can't sneak up on them like you'd do with UFOs pilots. Instead you'll have to stun them from the distance with the Tank's grenades or the Slingback Shooter's explosive ammo and then rush after them with the Super Hoop. If they do manage to enter the Ape Cannon, you can also leave the area and go back, which will make the monkeys return to their idle spot without triggering the Ape Cannons, giving you another chance to capture them straight away.
